Investing in Marketing

You might be the sole employee, or the leader of a larger workforce. Your initiatives so far are going ok, but in all honesty, you'd like them to be going a bit better. Now you're considering hiring a marketing agency and collaborating on some digital marketing initiatives.

Well first of all, well done! It's a big step to move from your comfort zone of traditional advertising towards better outcomes, and an even bigger step to consider collaborating with a creative agency to entrust with your brand. Right now chances are, the online marketing world seems like a foreign landscape, with buzz words such as SEO, Content Marketing, PPC and AdWords floating around, it can easily become overwhelming.

No one knows your business as well as you, so now that you've selected an agency, you want to make sure they get it. Especially if you've grown your business from the ground up. Don't feel as though you're rocking the boat by giving input, or revising design. It's important to state your goals and keep them in view the whole time, as they will influence your desired budget, positioning and in some cases creative and design elements.

If you're not sure what you want or need marketing wise (which is totally OK by the way), then transparency is an important attribute to look for. But remember this works both ways. Be honest, let them know what budget you've got to work with and what you're looking to get out of your marketing. While theres nothing wrong with sticking to traditional marketing, if you want to stand out you may need to do things a little differently. So ask your agency what they do to keep abreast of new trends, how they keep creativity and innovation alive and what their breadth of experience includes.

Owning and running a business is tough work. There are peaks and troughs and sometimes forecasts don't always pan out, or something unexpected crops up that you didn't budget for. So look for flexibility in a marketing agency. Someone that can ride the rollercoaster with you and be available when it suits your business. Investing in online marketing might seem like a big step, but as with any investiment throughout your life, take your time, do your research and choose wisely.
